Having honed her skills for sketching stories through words in her work as a journalist for over three decades, Joan Geraghty has also built up her own collection of pen and ink drawings over the years. After attending the creative Art course at Westport Further Education College in 2018, she developed an interest in illustration and graphic novel art and during the 2020 lockdown, was awarded E-College certificates in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. As the Covid-19 pandemic unfolded, Joan committed to completing and posting on Instagram one drawing a day to record the news stories from January 1 – December 31, 2020, which forms part of this, her first exhibition, being hosted by Ballina Arts Centre.

Year of Fear was a series of art illustrations and cartoons of the Covid-19 2020 year by Joan Geraghty. It captured a news-based, year-long sketch diary of the rollout of this historic global event alongside daily news stories covering themes of politics, economics, the UK Brexit deal, and HSE public health management. These ink and pen drawings and digital illustrations highlighted the curtailing of freedom of movement for the entire Irish population throughout the pandemic, as well as the sensational nature and global impact of Covid-19 on society.
